AI & Ifá
Ifá encodes knowledge in a fixed, binary-branching structure of 256 Odu, each with its own body of verses, guidance and precedent — an information architecture that long predates computing, and the subject of the book The Original AI.
The comparison is structural, not decorative. Ifá organises meaning through a determinate set of configurations, retrieved by a divination procedure and interpreted by a trained human being. Those are recognisable parts: an index, a retrieval step and a judgement step.
Sixteen principal Odu combine into 256 configurations. Each addresses situations, ethics, prohibitions and remedies through its verses. The corpus is bounded and named, which is exactly what makes it teachable, checkable and — properly published — retrievable.
Casting identifies which Odu applies; it does not deliver a conclusion. Interpretation belongs to a trained Babalawo reading the client, the verse and the situation together. Modern systems collapse those steps; the tradition keeps them separate on purpose.
Divination is not a lookup table, and initiatory knowledge is not fully transmissible through text. An AI system can help locate verses, translations and precedent; it cannot stand in for lineage, consent or the human teacher in the loop.

The claim in the book is about architecture: Ifá is an ancient structured knowledge system — 256 configurations indexing a vast body of verse and precedent — that performs the function we now build databases and models to perform. It is a comparison of information design, not a claim that Ifá is a computer.
No. Casting and interpretation belong to an initiated Babalawo working within lineage and consent. Software can assist with search, translation and study of published verses; it cannot hold the relationship or the authority that divination requires.
Because AI systems are already answering questions about Ifá from whatever text they were given. Accurate published sources from inside the tradition change those answers; silence leaves the distortion in place.
